About the Artist
Originally from the Pacific Northwest, Joan has lived most of her life in Southern California (with a few young years in Kentucky and Oregon). Now she is a longtime resident of Laguna Woods. She’s been painting since age twelve and has been to classes at art centers, local colleges, and workshops with many great art instructors.
She and her late husband were able to take cruises and trips to other countries, as well as visit U.S. cities, states, and parks. Joan takes many photos – and composes most of her paintings from these. She is a member of Scandinavian Lodges and shows paintings of the people, their land and some harbors at Lodge events and Christmas fairs.
Joan’s first love is the Ocean. She feels fortunate to live near the coast, with beach areas so close by. And occasionally drives westward to the beaches, takes photos – and either paints Plein Air on the spot or paints in her home studio from the photos. Some favorite places are Laguna Beach, North of the main beach and South behind the Montage Hotel near Aliso Creek (where the arch is), and further South in Dana Point and San Clemente – with their picturesque piers and boat harbors.
Her paintings are also available as note cards and prints. She accepts commissions (people, houses, pets). Most of her work is watercolor, along with some oils, acrylic, and collage.
